Portugal Visa for South Africans

We help South Africans apply for a Portuguese Schengen visa, and we arrange the police clearance certificates and apostilles that Portugal asks for when the stay is longer. Holders of ordinary South African passports need a visa before travelling to Portugal, and applications are submitted in person, by appointment, at a VFS Global centre in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban or Cape Town.

What we do

How Prestige Solutions helps

Whether you are planning a holiday in Lisbon or the Algarve, a family visit or a business trip, we take the form, the appointment booking and the follow-up off your hands.

Swipe for all four

Route check

We confirm that Portugal is the right country to apply through and which application centre serves the province where you live, before anything is paid for.

Application checking

We check your form and supporting documents against the consulate's published requirements and against each other, to reduce the risk of refusal.

Appointment and tracking

We book your appointment at the VFS Global centre for your province and prepare the file you hand in. You attend in person, and we track the application until your passport is back with you.

Documents for longer stays

If you are applying for a Portuguese residence or temporary stay visa, we obtain your SAPS police clearance certificate and have it apostilled by DIRCO.

Prestige Solutions prepares your application; the Portuguese consulate decides the outcome and the processing time.

Three steps

How it works

A passport holder being handed across a counter
  1. You

    Route and document list

Tell us about your trip and where in South Africa you live. We confirm the visa and the application centre, and send you a document list built for your situation.

  2. Prestige Solutions

    Application checked and appointment booked

We complete the application form with you, check your documents and book your appointment. Each member of a family or group needs their own application and appointment.

  3. You

    Appointment and decision

You hand in your application at the centre in person, where your fingerprints and photograph are normally taken. Fingerprints given for a Schengen application in the past 59 months can be reused, and young children do not give them. The Portuguese consulate decides the application, and we track it until your passport is returned.

What you need and what it costs

The visa

The Portuguese Schengen visa is a short-stay visa for tourism, family visits and business, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, with one or multiple entries. It is the right application when Portugal is your only or main destination, and our Schengen visa page explains how that rule works. A stay of more than 90 days needs a national visa instead, either a temporary stay visa or a residence visa.

What you need

  • A valid South African passport with blank visa pages
  • A return flight reservation and itinerary, with accommodation bookings or an invitation from your host
  • Evidence of funds for the trip and of your work or business in South Africa
  • Travel medical insurance valid across the Schengen area for your whole stay
  • Birth and parental consent documents for travellers under 18

When you enquire, we send you a document list built for your situation.

What it costs

  • The Schengen visa fee, set in euros and paid in rand
  • The VFS Global service charge, paid per application
  • Optional extras such as courier return of your passport
  • Our service fee

We confirm the current fees and our full quote upfront, so you know the full cost before we start.

Timing

How long it takes

A traveller pulling a red suitcase along a railway station platform

Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes a decision period of 15 calendar days from the date a Schengen visa application is accepted as admissible, extendable to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases. The Portuguese consulate determines processing. The application centre notes that the consulate in Cape Town processes applications in line with the travel date, and recommends not applying too far ahead.

Why us

Why choose Prestige Solutions

01

The right country and centre first

The Portuguese application centre accepts a Schengen application only where Portugal is the main destination or, for stays of equal length, the first point of entry, and where you live decides which centre takes it. We confirm both before you pay for anything.

02

Checked before your appointment

The application centre accepts applications but does not prepare them, and it warns that an incomplete application leads to delays or a refusal. We check yours first, to reduce that risk.

03

Police clearance and apostille under one roof

Portugal asks long-stay visa applicants for a criminal record certificate with an apostille. SAPS police clearance certificates and DIRCO apostilles are our core services.

04

One team for the whole trip

We handle visa applications for 75+ destinations, so a trip that also takes in the UK or Ireland, which are outside the Schengen area, stays with one team.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers to what South Africans ask us about visiting Portugal.

Do South Africans need a visa for Portugal

Yes. South Africa is on the list of countries whose nationals must hold a visa to enter the Schengen area, so on an ordinary passport you arrange a Portuguese Schengen visa before you travel. The application centre's rules also state that people who hold both a South African and an EU passport are not allowed to apply for a visa. Tell us which passport you will travel on and we will confirm what your trip needs.

Where do South Africans apply for a Portugal visa

Through VFS Global, the application centre for the Consulates General of Portugal in Johannesburg and Cape Town, which has centres in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town. The Embassy of Portugal in Pretoria does not issue visas. Applications are submitted in person and by appointment, and residents of the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape must apply at the Cape Town centre. Prestige Solutions is an independent company, so we prepare your application and book the appointment, and you hand it in yourself.

How long does a Portugal Schengen visa take

Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives a decision period of 15 calendar days from the date the application is accepted as admissible, which can be extended to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases. The consulate determines processing, so tell us your travel date early and we will plan the application around it.

Can I visit other Schengen countries on a Portuguese visa

Yes. A uniform Schengen visa issued by Portugal is valid for short stays across the Schengen area, which the Ministry lists as 29 countries, within your 90 days in any 180-day period. Portugal must still be your main destination or, where the stays are of equal length, your first point of entry. Send us your itinerary and we will confirm that Portugal is the right country to apply through.

What if I want to live, work or study in Portugal

That calls for a national visa, which is a separate application from the Schengen visa. Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issues temporary stay visas for stays of less than a year and residence visas for longer moves, with residence routes for subordinate (employed) work, independent work, highly qualified activity, remote work, study, retirement or passive income, and family reunification. A residence visa is valid for four months, and in that time its holder applies to the Agency for Integration, Migrations and Asylum (AIMA) for a residence permit. Portugal has replaced its job seeker visa with a skilled job seeker visa, and whether applications are open depends on the regulations in force when you apply. Tell us which route you are considering and we will arrange the police clearance certificate and apostille it calls for.

Do I need a police clearance certificate for a Portugal visa

Not for a short visit. The Portuguese consulates' Schengen checklists for South Africa do not ask for one. For a residence or temporary stay visa, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks applicants aged 16 or older for a criminal record certificate from their country of nationality, or from the country where they have lived for over a year. For both visas the application centre asks for a certificate no older than three months, and completed certificates commonly take one to six months from fingerprints to delivery, based on what our clients and enquirers report, so timing matters. Our police clearance service handles the SAPS certificate end to end.

Do my documents need an apostille for Portugal

For a long-stay visa, the criminal record certificate does. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs asks for it with the Hague Apostille or legalised, and South Africa and Portugal are both party to the Apostille Convention, so a SAPS police clearance certificate takes an apostille from DIRCO, which accepts only original certificates no older than six months. The consulates' checklists for a short-stay Schengen visa generally do not call for apostilled documents. Our attestation and apostille service handles the DIRCO step, and our guide to what an apostille is explains it.

What does a Portugal visa cost

The Schengen visa fee, the VFS Global service charge, any optional extras you choose and our service fee. The visa fee is set in euros and collected in rand, and children under 12 pay a reduced fee or none. Neither the visa fee nor the VFS Global service charge is refunded if the visa is refused. We confirm the current figures upfront, before we start.

What happens if my Portugal visa is refused

You are told why the application was refused and how to appeal. Portuguese law allows a complaint to the consulate or an appeal, each within a set time limit, and the application centre confirms that a new application can be made at any time. We can read the refusal with you and help you prepare a new application that answers its reasons.
